ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Performs moderate to complex patient services work. This includes routine and emergency care, treatment, and training for people with intellectual disabilities in a residential setting.
  • Performs routine nursing duties.
  • Work involves providing for the assessment, care and treatment of individuals. May train others.
  • Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
  • Works under the supervision of the Nurse Manager and Shift Coordinator.
  • The Unit RN may assign nursing responsibilities to the Unit LVN in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act. 
  •  The responsibility of the Unit RN is to provide for and supervise the professional nursing care of the individuals who reside in the facility.
  • The Unit RN is a member of the professional team and shares responsibility with other team members for the development of the individual’s program.
  • Work involves communication skills, i.e. relaying information to other team members, Primary Care Provider, nurses; data entry, documentation, completing reports, maintaining personnel records, supervisory duties of LVNs and psychiatric nursing assistants, and following all facility rules/policies.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, OR REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
  • Licensed to practice as a Vocational Nurse in the State of Texas (or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact)
  • Current CPR certification
  • Valid Photo ID

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Prior experience performing nursing duties
  • Must demonstrate considerable knowledge of nursing techniques and procedures; of health care laws and regulations; of medical diagnoses and procedures; of accepted medical treatment patterns; of community health and nursing care principles, practices, and procedures; of program regulations and procedures.
  • Must be able to appropriately interact with individuals with developmental disabilities and staff members.
  • Knowledge of nursing care standards, nursing procedures and techniques, and the principles and processes used in providing appropriate patient care.
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures and emergency equipment, i.e., CPR, and ability to assess and care for residents and/or staff members in emergency situations.
  • Skills in using reasoning to identify problems and in considering an appropriate resolution of situations.
  • Skill in the operation of computers and applicable computer software.
  • Skill in the care and treatment of patients.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and to use an electronic health record system once trained.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to instruct others.
  • Must have strength and flexibility to safely perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
